How To Light A Fire With Kindling
To light a fire with kindling, follow these steps:
- Prepare the fire area: Make sure you stove is regularly cleared of ash as this inhibits airflow. Place an eco firelighter in the centre.
- Arrange the kindling: Build a small structure over the firelighter using kindling arranged in a teepee or crisscross pattern. Leave enough space for airflow.
- Ignite the tinder: Light the firelighter with a match or lighter. As it catches fire, it will ignite the kindling above it.
- Add larger wood: Once the kindling is burning steadily, gradually add larger pieces of wood to build up the fire. Make sure to add them in a way that allows airflow to sustain the flames.
Why is kiln dried kindling the best?
Kiln-dried kindling is considered the best because it has a low moisture content, typically below 20%, which allows it to ignite quickly and burn efficiently. It may seem tempting to gather sticks from your garden but the moisture content will vary. This can result in a smokier fire that releases toxic emissions and inhibits the burning process.
