Fun Facts…. Dunchurch’s Historic Connection to Wood and Fire

Dunchurch’s historic connection to wood and fire is primarily through its association with the 1605 Gunpowder Plot and its historical forge/smithy. The plotters, awaiting news of the bombing of Parliament, met at the Old Lion Inn, a historic building still known today as Guy Fawkes House, where they would have used fire for heating and cooking. Separately, the village had a forge where iron was worked, using fire to shape wood and metal, with converted former forge buildings still standing today.
Gunpowder Plot
The meeting place: The conspirators met at the Old Lion Inn, a historic building that still stands and is now called Guy Fawkes House.
The connection to fire: The house, an old inn, would have been heated by fire, and it’s where the conspirators gathered to await news of Guy Fawkes’s attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament. The aftermath: The rebellion was planned here after the plot failed.
Forge and smithy
The location: A forge where wrought iron was made existed on Rugby Road during the Post Medieval and Imperial periods.
The connection to wood and fire: The forge would have used fire to heat and work with iron. The buildings have since been converted into cottages, but still exist today.
A legendary connection: The site is also reputedly connected to a chestnut tree that was supposedly associated with the American poet Longfellow’s work, further tying it to the natural world of wood.
