Fun Facts…. Hitchin’s Historic Connection to Wood and Fire

Historic Fires in Hitchin
• There was a major fire in 1628 that devastated Hitchin. Over 100 houses were destroyed, around one third of all the town’s housing at the time.
• The town also suffered “severe damage” during the English Civil War (1642-1646), including destruction, which would have involved fires and burning of structures. These kinds of events forced rebuilding, influenced building materials and affected town planning.
Wood & Timber, Thatched Buildings, Wood Trades
• Thatched roofs: Thatched roofing, using reed and straw, was common in historic houses around Hitchin. There are still thatchers in the area who preserve this craft.
• Timber yards and sawmills: In Hitchin’s industrial/commercial development, wood processing, timber yards and sawmills were significant. For example, Neithrop’s timber yard is mentioned in histories of Hitchin industry.
• Timber framed or partly wooden structures: Many older buildings would have used wood for framework, like internal beams, as was common before brick became dominant.
Interactions of Wood & Fire with Hitchin’s Development
• Because many buildings were wooden or thatched, they were vulnerable in major fires. As with many historic towns, the frequency or severity of fires would have driven changes: using more fire-resistant materials, changing closeness of buildings and improving fire prevention.
• The industrial uses of fire: kilns, furnaces, workshops. For instance, Hitchin had lime kilns and clay kilns as part of its historic industry.
