Fun Facts…. Wolverton’s Historic Connection to Wood and Fire

Timber Industry & Precision Woodworking
• Wolverton Works, established in 1838, was a center of railway carriage production under the London & North Western Railway (LNWR). Its facilities included:
◦ A timber yard, where high‑quality woods—mahogany, oak, walnut, teak—were seasoned for three years, while sycamore and deal served internal functions like partitions and floors.
◦ A full sawmill, complete with a square‑hole boring machine, where logs were mechanically shaped and wooden parts for wagons and carriages were crafted with precision.
Fire — A Recurrent Challenge
• In 1933, a serious fire erupted at Wolverton Works, threatening the royal train stored there. The local fire brigade heroically saved the royal carriages—so much so that the King himself extended personal thanks.
• A more symbolic instance occurred in 1970 when the Wolverton Science and Arts Institute suffered fire damage and was ultimately demolished—highlighting the vulnerability of local institutions and the community’s evolution through loss.
Industrial Hazards & Local Heritage
• The woodworking environment itself—full of sawdust, timber stores, and open machinery—carried significant fire risk. Managing that was a constant priority, especially around heat-generating equipment like steam hammers or paint shops that demanded up to sixteen coats of paint over sixteen days!
• More broadly, the town’s identity was shaped by both the creative use of wood and the courage of those protecting it from fire, from early mill operations through to industrial-scale railway manufacturing.
