Fun Facts…. Wollaston’s Historic Connection to Wood and Fire

Wollaston’s historic connection to wood and fire is primarily through the destruction of the old Congregational Chapel by fire, which then led to the creation of the Wollaston Heritage Society Museum in its rebuilt form. In 1974, after the building was severely damaged by a fire, the property was transferred to the Society, which then worked to restore it into the museum that exists today.
• The fire: The old Congregational Chapel in High Street was gutted by a fire, leaving it in a state of serious neglect.
• The restoration: Instead of demolishing the building, local companies and the Wollaston Heritage Society worked to rebuild and refurbish it with the help of significant financial aid and a Deed of Trust in 1974.
• The outcome: This effort resulted in the former chapel being transformed into the current Wollaston Heritage Museum, a project made possible by overcoming the destruction caused by the fire.
