Fun Facts…. Thame’s Historic Connection to Wood and Fire

Market Town Built from Timber
Many of Thame’s medieval buildings were constructed using oak timber from nearby Chiltern forests.
The timber-framed architecture still visible in parts of Thame reflects traditional building techniques that relied heavily on wooden beams and wattle and daub.
Historic Hearths and Open Fires
Before chimneys were common, Thame’s homes had open hearths in the center of rooms with smoke escaping through the roof. The Blacksmith’s forge, an essential part of town life, was a constant source of controlled fire, used for tools, horseshoes, and even early locks.
Thame’s Fire of 1684
A major fire in the late 17th century swept through parts of Thame, fuelled by timber structures and thatched roofs. This disaster led to the replacement of many thatch roofs with tiles, and the development of more fire-conscious construction.
Fire Marks & Insurance Plaques
Look closely at old buildings in Thame, some still have fire insurance plaques on the front. These metal plaques signalled that a property was insured and which fire brigade would come to the rescue, a quirky part of 18th-century fire history.
May Day Traditions and Fire
Traditional May Day festivals in Thame included bonfires, symbolizing the renewal of spring and the purging of old spirits. These seasonal fires often took place on communal greens or village edges.
Wood-Fired Bread and Brewing
Historical bakeries and breweries in Thame used wood-fired ovens and kilns. Some pubs in Thame still boast historic hearths, hinting at a time when everyday life was centred around fire and flame.
