Fun Facts….Desborouogh’s Historic Connection to Wood and Fire

Evolution of Industry: From Textiles to Shoemaking
• Desborough’s economic roots stretch back centuries, with 17th-century prominence in spinning and weaving wool and linen using local raw materials and likely wood-fired heating for workshops and homes.
• In the mid-19th century, silk weaving and lace-making emerged (notably with a factory on Paddock Lane), before boot and shoe manufacturing took over as the town’s dominant trade.
• While explicit references to wood and fire aren’t named in these industrial narratives, all these processes, textile workshops, factories, would have relied heavily on fire as heat for pressing, drying, or powering steam, with wood or coal as typical fuel sources of the era.
Quarrying Ironstone: Sparks with Potential
• From 1859 onward, following the arrival of the railway, Desborough became a hub for ironstone quarrying, which continued until 1966.
• Mining operations like this generated their own fire-related risks, whether from lime kilns, foundations for furnaces, or sparks from industrial gear. Though no major fires are recorded here historically, the potential was inherent in such heavy industry.
RAF Desborough: A Fire-Fuelled Legacy
• During 1943–1953, the area hosted RAF Desborough, a Royal Air Force station used for training purposes.
• Decades later, in March 2025, a significant fire engulfed a T.2-type hangar at the former airfield, used for storing carpet waste. The blaze raged for weeks, scattering smoke across villages and drawing multiple fire crews, eventually deemed to have been started deliberately.
Surrounding Woods: Timber History Nearby
• Just west of Desborough lies Stoke Wood, part of the ancient Rockingham Forest. Rich in oak, ash and birch, this woodland speaks to a bygone era when forests provided construction timber, firewood, industrial fuel and a backdrop for the town’s early growth.
